Why I Am an IMAlive Volunteer

Life is scary and stressful but it's also beautiful and worthwhile. Especially in today's technological, fast paced society so many are becoming overwhelmed and hopeless. I want to restore hope to people, to encourage them to keep experiencing and learning.

Over the years I've witnessed friends and family fall prisoners to the idea that life isn't worth it anymore or attempt to take a dangerous new route. Sometimes all anyone needs is a reminder that everyone is unique and has limitless options. I know it's important for people to have a healthy outlet to turn to when in trouble and know that hotlines like this one save lives. Every life is precious and all I want is the opportunity to help.

Currently I'm an undergraduate psychology major taking classes but I want experience. Last year I interned at a program that provided help and education to students on campus who had been sexually assaulted, in abusive relationships, and bullied. It was an amazing experience that allowed me to get a taste of what a difference having someone in your corner to listen and give resources can make. I want to become more thoroughly trained to continue to provide a pathway for change.

The new and modern method of IMAlive especially caught my attention, because it harnesses the power and influence of the internet to reach a whole new audience. There has been an increase of depression and suicide ever since internet has been made easily accessible. Previously people could leave their problems or harassers at work or school, but now these troubles follow everyone home. Social networking sites and forums leave people vulnerable without an oasis but IMAlive allows a whole new haven within the internet making the problem a solution. Everyone has the power to say, "This is not how my story will end." I want to keep people writing their story whether it's just listening, helping them find alternative endings, or putting them in contact with someone who can.
